The thing crypto casino players need to know about GAMSTOP
If you are in the UK and you self-exclude through GAMSTOP, it blocks every casino licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. That is genuinely effective and you should use it.
But almost none of the casinos reviewed on this site hold a UK licence. They are licensed in Curaçao, Anjouan, Costa Rica and similar. GAMSTOP does not reach them. A player who registers with GAMSTOP, believes they are protected, and then finds a crypto casino that lets them straight in is in a worse position than before, because they thought the door was locked.
The same gap applies to most national self-exclusion schemes. They cover licensed domestic operators, and offshore crypto casinos sit outside them by design.
If you want a block that actually covers offshore and crypto casinos, you need device-level blocking software.
Locking yourself out
BetBlocker — free, and it covers offshore sites. betblocker.org is a free charity-run app that blocks tens of thousands of gambling sites at device level, including offshore and crypto casinos. It costs nothing, needs no personal details, and once a restriction period is set you cannot undo it before it expires. If you take one thing from this page, take this one, because it is free and it works on the casinos that national schemes miss.
Gamban — gamban.com, paid, similar device-level coverage, and free through some treatment services.
Your bank. Most UK and many Canadian banks now offer a gambling block that refuses gambling transactions on your card, usually with a cooling-off period before it can be lifted. Look for “gambling block” in your banking app. It is free and it is one of the most effective single steps available.
Crypto is a gap here too, and you should know it. A bank gambling block works by recognising the merchant category of a gambling transaction. Buying cryptocurrency from an exchange is not a gambling transaction, so a bank block will not stop a deposit routed through crypto. If crypto is how you fund gambling, the bank block alone is not enough — pair it with BetBlocker.
National self-exclusion schemes: GAMSTOP (UK, all UK-licensed sites), iGaming Ontario and OLG (Ontario-registered sites), Cruks (Netherlands), Spelpaus (Sweden), ROFUS (Denmark).
Limits worth setting before you need them
Most of the casinos we review offer at least some of these. They are easier to set on a calm day than a bad one.
- Deposit limit — daily, weekly or monthly. The single most useful tool, because it caps the damage regardless of what happens at the tables.
- Loss limit — a cap on net losses in a period.
- Session time limits and reality checks — a reminder on screen telling you how long you have been playing and whether you are up or down.
- Cooling-off — a short lockout, usually 24 hours to 6 weeks.
- Account closure — permanent, and a request to close should not be reversible on a whim.
A limit that takes effect immediately when you lower it, but requires a waiting period when you raise it, is the sign of a casino doing this properly. We note which operators get this right in our reviews.
The maths, plainly
Every game on every site we review is built with a house edge. That is not a defect — it is the definition of a casino. Over enough spins or hands, the edge wins. It is why casinos exist and how they pay for everything.
- No betting system beats a negative-expectation game. Martingale, Fibonacci, D’Alembert and the rest change the shape of your results, not the average. Doubling after a loss works until you hit the table limit or run out of money, and then it loses everything at once.
- “Provably fair” means the result was not rigged. It does not mean the odds are in your favour. A provably fair dice game with a 1% house edge is honest and still takes 1% of everything staked, forever. Both things are true at once, and the marketing tends to mention only the first.
- RTP is a long-run average over millions of spins. A 96% RTP slot does not return £96 of every £100 you put in during your session. Your session is statistical noise.
- A near-miss is not a near-win. The reels stopping one symbol short is a designed visual effect, not evidence you were close.
- Losses are not “due” to come back. Each spin is independent. The machine has no memory of what it owes you.
If you are gambling to win back money you have lost, that is the single most reliable warning sign in the whole subject, and it is worth ringing one of the numbers above today.
Warning signs
- Gambling with money meant for bills, rent or food
- Borrowing to gamble, or selling things to gamble
- Chasing losses with bigger stakes
- Lying about how much you gamble, or hiding it
- Gambling to escape stress, low mood, loneliness or boredom
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
- Arguments about money, or secrecy about it
- Gambling longer than you meant to, most times you start
- Feeling relief rather than enjoyment when you play
One of these on its own may mean nothing. Several together are worth taking seriously.
If it is someone else
Gambling harm spreads to the people around it, and the support above is open to family and friends, not just the person gambling. GamCare and Gam-Anon both run support specifically for affected family members, and the helplines listed above will talk to you about someone else’s gambling.
Practical things that help: do not pay off gambling debts on their behalf, do protect your own finances and any joint accounts, and do get support for yourself rather than waiting for them to be ready.
Under 18
Online gambling is 18+ everywhere we cover, and 19+ in most Canadian provinces. It is illegal for a minor to gamble and illegal for an operator to let them. If you share a device with children, parental controls and the blocking software above will keep gambling sites off it.
What we do on this site
- We do not present gambling as a way to make or recover money, in any article.
- We do not publish betting systems or “beat the casino” content, because it does not work.
- We lead our reviews with how hard it is to get your money out, not with how big the bonus looks.
- We publish withdrawal caps and maximum-cashout limits that operators would rather we did not, including on casinos that pay us.
- We exclude Ontario from every casino listing, because the casinos we review cannot legally be registered there.
- We will not list a casino to a reader whose country the casino refuses.
We are funded by commission from casinos — see the Affiliate Disclosure. We think that makes it more important to put this page in front of you, not less.
18+. Gambling is entertainment that costs money. It is not an income, an investment, or a way out of debt.
